Cyberbullying

I would like to begin this blog post with how inspirational the videos on Cyberbullying.org are. I watched every single video and wanted more when I was finished. It is inspiring to see how students are standing up to Cyberbullying and exclusion, as well as other issues. I thought of ways to incorporate many of these videos into my fourth-grade classroom to help my own students understand their impact.

After reading "How it's done: Incorporating Digital Citizenship into your Everyday Curriculum" I began to think about how I could integrate digital citizenship and antibullying through the year in an elementary classroom. Having students learn to teach is a great strategy. In an elementary school, I could have the older 3-5 students create projects to share with the K-2 students.  

I think one of the things that surprised me when reading "From the Sandbox to the Inbox: Comparing the Acts, Impacts, and Solutions of Bullying in K-12, Higher Education, and the Workplace" was that faculty experience bullying and mobbing by faculty and superiors more than by students. One would think adults would have learned respect and anti-bullying during their own experiences, but this article explains that bullying does not end after high school and there have been many instances of college-level and adult-level bullying. 

When I am working with my own students, I hope to integrate anti-bullying throughout the year. There are many videos that are available that would lend themselves to bullying discussions. There are also multitudes of children's books that are appropriate for anti-bullying discussions. I also hope to build a community so that students do not cyberbully each other outside of the classroom.

    I also really enjoyed the videos for this week on cyberbullying and felt inspired by the many great projects. It is great to have such quality resources to inspire our own students. I like your idea of having the older students teach the younger ones within an elementary school. Having to teach something ensures that the "teacher" truly understands the concept. If you continue to have the older students do this over multiple years the younger students will eventually become the "teachers" ensuring that they also thoroughly understand the impacts of cyberbullying. If we can get our students to learn the correct behaviors at a young age hopefully our higher education institutions and work places will improve over time.

    Taylor,
    I did not even think about the long term benefits of having a teaching program for cyberbullying. Such a small thing in the grand scheme of school could have huge benefits.

 Accessibility Tools  Tool for visual impairments or reading disabilities As an Elementary reading teacher and future librarian, I spend a lot of my time trying to encourage all of my students to read and become emersed in books. I teach a variety of students each year and I have taught several students with dyslexia or other reading disabilities. Reading does not come easy to these students, but I have found that they still love a good story. A tool that I have used in the past to help these students is Librivox .  Librivox is a free collection of Audiobooks. These books are read by volunteers and are able to be downloaded by anyone. I like to encourage my students when listening to audiobooks to follow along in the text. This strategy can help build vocabulary and fluency. Having students with reading disabilities listen to audiobooks and follow along has helped my students become more willing readers. VR/AR Technology: Google Arts and Culture

Google Expeditions I found out this week that Google Expeditions is over. I read about it and I refused to believe it, so I opened my Expeditions App and it could not download or open any of the content. It was at this moment that my heart shattered. I loved teaching science with Google Expeditions. I moved to ELA and social studies for the last two years, but I still used Expeditions after winter break to explore battlefields and historical places beyond South Carolina. I have now accepted that I will not be doing that this year. It is with this new knowledge that I began searching through Google Expeditions' replacement Google Arts and Culture.  Google Arts and Culture  When I began searching through the content on Google Arts and Culture I was slightly unimpressed.
